UoS holds Thalassemia awareness drive and free screening camp

The University of Sargodha organised an awareness seminar, walk and premarital screening camp as part of continued activities following World Thalassemia Day to promote early diagnosis and prevention of the hereditary blood disorder.

The event was arranged by the Department of Allied Health Sciences and the Blood Donor Society in collaboration with the Punjab Thalassemia and other Genetic Disorders Prevention and Research Institute (PTGD), Sargodha Region, under the theme “Hidden No More: Finding the Undiagnosed, Supporting the Unseen”.

A walk led by Prof Dr Muhammad Usman Minhas, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, was attended by students, faculty members, health professionals and Blood Donor Society volunteers. SP Investigation Imran Abbas Chadhar attended as the guest of honor.

Addressing the seminar, speakers stressed the importance of premarital screening and awareness to curb the spread of thalassemia in Pakistan.

Department of Allied Health Sciences Chairman Dr Muhammad Riaz urged students to undergo screening before marriage, while Prof Dr Khawaja Muhammad Arshad of Sargodha Medical College highlighted the causes, diagnosis and prevention of the disease.

PTGD regional head Muneeb Rahmat said the Punjab government has been providing free diagnostic and preventive services and added that thalassemia could largely be prevented through simple blood tests before marriage. A free screening camp was also held for students and participants.
