The Institute of Chemistry, University of Sargodha, organized a one-day seminar on Functional Materials, bringing together eminent scientists. Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas graced the event as the chief guest.
Renowned speakers including Prof. Walther Schwarzacher, Dean SBA School of Science and Engineering, LUMS; Prof. Irshad Hussain from LUMS; and Dr. Saifullah Awan from the National Centre for Physics, Islamabad, delivered expert talks.
The speakers highlighted the nature, applications, and scientific significance of functional materials, describing them as advanced substances that exhibit unique electrical, optical, thermal, magnetic, or mechanical properties, making them essential in energy storage, electronics, biomaterials, sensors, and sustainable technologies.
Prof. Walther Schwarzacher underscored the foundational role of molecules, stating that the structure and interactions of molecules determine the properties of matter and are central to understanding life and nature.
Prof. Irshad Hussain discussed the use of functional materials in energy devices, nanotechnology, biomedical applications, electronic components, and environmental improvement.
Dr. Saifullah Awan shed light on emerging research at the interface of chemistry and physics, particularly in nanoscience and advanced analytical techniques.
Addressing the seminar, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas said that chemistry forms the backbone of modern science, with direct relevance to life sciences, agriculture, engineering, and medicine. He urged students to embrace innovation, research, and global scientific trends to keep pace with the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Director Institute of Chemistry, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Sher, highlighted the objectives of the seminar, stating that such academic events promote exposure to cutting-edge research, foster academic collaboration, and help students stay aligned with emerging scientific developments.
He added that the institute will continue to organize similar initiatives to further strengthen scientific learning and research culture at UoS.
