The University of Sargodha has approved a Rs 6 billion budget for fiscal year 2025-26, endorsing a series of strategic reforms including new academic positions, establishment of research centres, operationalization of its pharmaceutical industrial unit as a joint venture, and creation of university-backed start-ups.
These decisions were made during the Syndicate meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaiser Abbas. The budget approval followed recommendations from the Finance and Planning Committee and signals a major push towards academic innovation, research integration, and institutional autonomy.
Among the key developments, the Syndicate sanctioned new posts for the Interdisciplinary Research Unit, Centre for One Health, and the Directorate of Advanced Studies and Research. It also approved turning the University's Pharmaceutical Industrial Unit into a public-private venture aimed at strengthening research commercialization.
In another decision, the Syndicate gave a nod to establish spin-off and start-up companies under the University's umbrella to foster innovation and entrepreneurship among faculty and students.
Addressing the members, Prof. Dr. Qaiser Abbas stated, “The University is entering a new phase of academic expansion and research excellence. Our reforms are aligned with national priorities and global benchmarks.”
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders including PHEC Chairman Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmad Khan, former VC Dr. Tariq Mahmood representing HEC Islamabad, MPAs Mansoor Azam Sindhu and Sardar Asim Sher Maken, senior officials from Punjab’s Higher Education, Finance, and Law departments, and university deans and principals.
The members applauded the University’s recent inclusion in the prestigious X-Category by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and lauded the successful commissioning of a 2.7 MW solar energy system, positioning UoS as a model of sustainable campus operations.
At the end of the meeting, the Syndicate members visited the newly established History Wall, recognizing it as a valuable step towards preserving institutional heritage.
