University of Sargodha Launches Annual Sports Gala with Grand Ceremony

The University of Sargodha kicked off its 23rd Annual Sports Gala with a vibrant and well-attended opening ceremony held at the university cricket ground.
The event celebrated the spirit of sportsmanship, teamwork, and youth engagement, drawing participation from students, faculty, and special guests from across the province.
Punjab’s Minister for Law, Communication and Works, Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharath attended the ceremony as Chief Guest while the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sargodha, Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas, graced the event as Guest of Honor.
The ceremony was further honored by the presence of notable dignitaries including Member of Punjab Assembly Mian Ikramullah, Chairman of Zakat and Ushr Council Rana Manawar Ghous, Chairman of Punjab Education Foundation Malik Shoaib Awan, Chairman Pearl Residencia Mian Faheem Asad, and CEO of Tayyaba Oil Shop Rana Shahid Mehmood.
University officials including Registrar Waqar Ahmad, Treasurer Muhammad Anwar, Controller of Examinations Dr. Rehana Ilyas, Director Sports Mehr Ahmad Khan Harl, Chairman of Teaching Departments’ Sports Committee Prof. Dr. Aamir Ali, Chairman of the University Sports Committee Prof. Dr. Masood Sarwar Awan, and Chairperson of the Women’s Sports Committee Prof. Dr. Riffat-un-Nisa was also in attendance. A large number of faculty members, administrative officers, and students from various departments participated with enthusiasm.
The event began with a warm welcome for the distinguished guests, followed by a guard of honor from the University Security Wing. Traditional performances such as the “Horse Dance” captivated the audience, while a thrilling exhibition match of Kabaddi featuring renowned national players became the highlight of the day.
To encourage faculty involvement in sports, an engaging tug-of-war competition was held between teams from the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of Social Sciences, drawing cheers and applause from the crowd.
Addressing the gathering, Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharath emphasized the importance of sports beyond entertainment, stating that “sports play a vital role in character building, leadership development, discipline, and teamwork.
He highlighted the Punjab government’s commitment to promoting sports alongside education, particularly through talent hunt programs aimed at discovering and nurturing young athletes for national and international platforms. He also appreciated the University of Sargodha’s efforts in encouraging extracurricular activities.
In his address, Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas reiterated the university’s vision of shaping a well-rounded, character-driven generation. Our goal goes beyond awarding degrees—we aim to nurture balanced, responsible, and dynamic individuals, he said. 
The Vice Chancellor highlighted the investment in modern sports facilities, gymnasiums, professional trainers, and open grounds to provide students with platforms to refine their physical potential. He stressed that a healthy youth is the foundation of an enlightened and progressive society.
As part of the Sports Gala, a wide range of competitions have been scheduled, including athletics, badminton, table tennis, chess, basketball, and tennis for male students. Female students will compete in cricket, handball, football, kabaddi, tug-of-war, and shooting ball, among others.
More than just a traditional annual event, the Sports Gala serves as a vibrant platform to promote student engagement, encourage positive competition, and foster a culture of health and confidence.
