The University of Sargodha came alive with the vibrant sights and sounds of Punjab as the Department of Punjabi organized a grand celebration of Punjab Cultural Day.
The event, marked by traditional performances, poetry, and vibrant attire, reflected the values of love, peace, and harmony deeply rooted in Punjabi heritage.
The festivities began with an awareness walk, followed by a special session Punjabi Language and culture, a Punjabi mushaira (poetic gathering), Heer singing performances, and a lively "Boliyaan" competition.
Students participated enthusiastically, donning traditional Punjabi attire, male students wore colorful turbans while female students showcased the iconic chunri bringing the regionโs rich cultural expressions to life. The rhythmic beat of the Dhol energized the event, as students performed the traditional bhangra, captivating the audience with their spirit and coordination.
The special session featured renowned Punjabi language and literature advocate, Azam Ranjha, as the chief guest. In his address, Ranjha appreciated Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Qaisar Abbas and Registrar Waqar Ahmad for promoting Punjabi culture at the university level. If the Punjabi language survives, Punjab survives, he remarked, emphasizing the need to promote Punjabi in schools and colleges for its preservation.
Dr. Muneer Gujar, Head of the Punjabi Department, highlighted the peaceful essence of the Punjabi language. Punjabi is the language of peace and harmony. Great Sufi poets like Baba Bulleh Shah, Baba Farid, and Waris Shah conveyed messages of unity and compassion through Punjabi, he noted. He added that Punjabi poetry could serve as a beacon of peace in a world troubled by conflict.
Assistant Registrar Riaz Shad Co-curricular forum Daim Iqbal pointed out the literary richness of Sargodha, stating that the city has produced many renowned Punjabi poets and writers, just like other cultural hubs of Punjab.
Notable figures from the media and literary circles, including journalists Kamran Malik, Zahid Maqbool Sheikh, and Malik Fazal, were also in attendance. Kamran Malik commended the University of Sargodha for its continuous efforts in keeping the Punjabi language and culture alive.
The event also featured passionate performances by Yasir Ali, Fasihullah Shah, and Zaheer Abbas, whose Heer renditions and witty boliyan left the audience enthralled. The Punjabi mushaira saw stirring verses from poets Ghulam Haider, Momin Hashmi, Hayat Bhatti, Mehreen Fatima, and Asim Sial, each receiving resounding applause.
