It started its journey in 1929 with the establishment of De Montmorency College later renamed in 1946 as Government College Sargodha, which was granted university status in 2002.

Despite relatively short lifespan, its academic profile is impressive: Over 25,000 students being taught by more than 700 faculty members, including 270 PhDs, in 31 departments, four constituent colleges and nine faculties at the main campus and sub-campuses in Sargodha city and another two sub-campuses in Mianwali and Bhakkar. There are also five public-private partnership campuses in Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala and Mandi Bahauddin as well as over 400 affiliated colleges spread across the province of Punjab, whose faculty and student numbers are not counted above.

The University of Sargodha is ideally located not far from Lahore-Islamabad motorway in a city of central Punjab that has the oldest and largest airbase, and in a region popularly known as the California of Pakistan due to rich citrus production. The university has achieved a national distinction for synergizing academia with industry by innovating agrarian products and managing businesses such as pharmacy and mineral water, and offering a variety of community services, including medical emergency and lab facilities. A 200-bed hospital will soon start functioning. The university also runs an FM radio station.

It offers modern facilities to students and scholars, including rich library resources with online access to books and journals, well-equipped research labs and classrooms well as a secure and serene environment for sports and co-curricular activities. With an affordable fee structure, it provides a host of scholarship, internship and business opportunities to deserving and competitive students. Campus life remains abuzz with scholarly events. Young faculty members are encouraged to travel abroad for academic pursuits. Several members of its senior faculty have been associated with renowned universities of the world.

Quality, productivity, efficiency, transparency and accountability are the core principles of academic and management affairs at University of Sargodha. Currently led by a Vice Chancellor who served as Senior Fellow at Oxford University (2010-15), it strategically aims to become a national hub of advanced studies and research by promoting a culture of academic enquiry among students, diversifying student and faculty composition, developing new and consolidating existing programs and facilities, expanding academic-industrial linkages for further knowledge sharing as well as improving its global outlook through national and international collaborations.
